Mental Health Matters

There is no single “official” definition of the term “mental health”, but we all have it, we all experience it and we are all aware of when it is good, and not so good, and everything in-between.

We talk about it often. It’s bounced around the workplace, at home, and in the news. We all have it, no exceptions. Some of us are extremely resilient, with mental capacity, and some of us can be off the scale with coping mechanisms and can kick around those big curve balls that life throws at us.

Some of us will experience wobbles and will get gently back on track, while others will experience longer effects of mental health challenges with different personal experiences, and can be completely derailed for a while.

Even though, generally in the workplace, we are much more savvy than we were let’s say, ten years ago, there is still, in my experience terrible stigma, lack of understanding and unkindness towards individuals who have needed to take time away from work to heal their minds. Far too much is brushed under the carpet, and organisations need to be more sensitive in their approach to person-centred support.
